Resting Loop with Views, a Creekside
Pavilion among Hills

重景环：罗浮山绿屏石滩，惠州

Resting Loop with Views is located on a platform surrounded by Mount Luofu. The site is
situated between the highway and a parallel river, originally serving as a
buffer zone and a parking area at a sharp turn. The pavilion serves as a rest
stop and vista point for cycling enthusiasts, offering services for parking
and beverage.

This porous concrete donut, like a UFO,
flies low above the stone platform, featuring diversified scenic frames on
double levels: one of sunken plaza and the other floating above. Looking to
both the river and mountains, the lower level provides seating area for
drinking, while the upper level allows for an endless-loop promenade.

The viewing platform, with an outer
diameter of 16 meters, takes the form of a donut, cut by vertical planes in
several directions, creating oval openings that frame different vistas. These
cutouts overlap within each other. Walking on the ring, one can gaze at the
sky, observe the water and enjoy the lush green.

Three supporting concrete volumes stand on
the sunken plaza, housing a tiny cafe, a public toilet, and a storage, with
doors and windows looking through each other. The dark hammered finishing of
these volumes echoes with the plaza's stone paving, as-well-as the sculpture
seats "social stone" (by Shanghai-based artist SU Chang).

With respect to the wild nature, the
exterior surface was casted in-situ with molds of raised-texture bamboo of
approximately 7cm in diameter of its section. The interior surface, by
contrast, is smooth and seamless, creating an abstract, transcendent experience.
The two contrasting finishings contrast at the edge of the oval cuts, where the
ruffle shape edge highlights the prominence of bamboo texture.

Contrary to the architect's initial vision
of tranquil seclusion in the mountains, the flying donut quickly became a
popular destination and a must-visit stop for cyclists, filled with the sounds
of people and the hustle of vehicles.

Osmanthus Moon Pavilion
月桂亭，上海

Osmanthus Moon is a short-term public art installation created to celebrate the
traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. It is a projection, specially as well
as metaphorically, of the widely beloved traditional osmanthus pattern — a
signature plant and flavor of autumn — and forms a dialogue with the action
paintings of a folk “Zao Hua” (stove flower) artist, an intangible cultural
heritage tradition.

The pavilion rests on the semicircular lawn
of Century Park like a translucent full moon descending in quietness. Its
spatial framework weaves traditional osmanthus motifs into vine-like bronze
patterns, while lightweight elastic fabric stretches across the surface to form
the moon's luminous skin. The design pays tribute to the 'golden cabbage' of
the Vienna Secession while aspiring to evoke the romantic sci-fi sensibility of
Buckminster Fuller domes.

The osmanthus patterns painted on the
ground by the Zao Hua artist mirror the golden lattice of the dome above
— each a projection of the other. Together, they form a complementary dialogue
between on-site and prefabrication, movement and stillness.

Delicate, radiant, and fragile — it
embodies the timeless yet brittle joy and longing that the 'moon' and the
'osmanthus' have evoked through the ages.

Visitors may enter through two irregular
openings into the interior of the moon. During the daytime, the space is
characterized by impressionistic light and soft textile surfaces; at night, the
interplay of shadows and diffused illumination transforms the interior into an
immersive, dreamlike environment — as if one were stepping into a temporal
mirror.

The project was commissioned by the Power
Station of Art in Shanghai and was presented for a duration of twelve days.

Renovation of Westbund Dream Center

西岸梦中心1栋3栋改造，上海

The West Bund Dream Center, is a new cultural commercial
destination along Shanghai Huangpu River, built upon the former site of
Shanghai Cement Factory. Undergone a decade of pending, the project finally becomes
a dynamic district with river breezes and gathering crowds, combining a sense
of rawness with refined life style. Among the district, BLDG1 and BLDG3 along
Longteng Avenue are designed by HCCH.

Besides the well-worn themes such as new into old, adaptive
reuse and hybrid program, the most intriguing topic we find in this project is
how can we react and negotiate within an urban context that constantly mutating
and drastically fragmented. We seek to break free from sterile modernist
aesthetics by allowing a certain degree of chaos and spontaneity in our design.
The project presents a fluid condition that hovers between Laissez-faire and
cautious control.

Situated at the threshold of the district, BLDG1 and BLDG3
boast a prolonged frontage along Longteng Avenue. The north end frames the
Event Plaza together with the Dome Art Center and the West Bund Grand Theater
(designed by SHL), while the east end forms a vibrant pedestrian street in
dialogue with the colorful stacking boxes (designed by Atelier Deshaus).

Renovated from unfinished black box theaters, two buildings
now become a mixed-use nightlife threshold of the Dream Center, covering bar,
retail, live house and office. The previous heavy massing and black boxes are
wrapped by new envelope with permeability and transparency.

Aiming to achieve big effect with small intervention, the
renovation focuses on optimizing circulation and activating interface while
leaving the main structure retained. Permeability is enhanced by opening up the
previous solid perimeter, while connectivity is improved by adding platforms
and stairs cross multiple levels. By using only aluminium in
various texture and tone, the façade achieves a balance between cost efficiency
and visual richness.

Pairs
in gold and silver, BLDG1&3 complement and contrast each other by playing
with transparency and saturation. Curving motif recurs across scales from
outline to detail, to breaking down the monolithic massing and correspond to
its context and neighbor.

Sea Snail, PTFE Membrane Pavilion by the sea, Shanghai

“海螺”织物膜驿站，上海临港海岸

Lingang Coast Ecological Pavilions are three small structures of Shanghai Lingang Ecological
Restoration Project, scattered along the 17-kilometer-long coastline. They
serve as landmarks along the extensive shoreline, providing basic resting spots
for citizens while also serving as eco-educational
exhibits.

The design of
pavilions considers three main aspects: how to create distinctive features and
interest within the given site conditions and budget, how to occupy the space while avoid FAR, and how to
integrate marine science themes into the form
and material of the pavilions.

With a flat, open, uniform, prolonged landscape, Lingang coastline provides a surreal atmosphere different from Shanghai's daily scenery, with huge wind
turbines, giant boulder-like wave breakers, and endless sea. This
determined the basic strategy of the design: the pavilions would engage the site as follies, enhancing the
site's surreal experience with alien volumes and materials. The pavilions would have no
roof, expanding their spatial capacity through large enclosing walls,
components as framework, and porous material distribution. Abstracting marine symbols and combining
with environmentally friendly materials, the pavilions themselves aim to have
educational significance from both visual and tectonic perspectives.

Considering the
considerable distance and the lack of potential for them to be conceived as a cohesive
group, three pavilions are designed as individual installations in terms of form and material to provide maximum
recognizability. However, they all share the aforementioned properties: readable figures, porous, and as exhibition per se. Throughout the construction, the three pavilions have colloquially been referred to as: "Membrane Sea Snail," "
3D-print Plastic Wave Breaker Splash," and "Recycled Brick Coral Reef."

The Membrane Sea Snail is located
under a large wind turbine. Its main structure consists of eight steel arches gradiently forming an
inside-out flip structure, covered with a silver fabric membrane. The base
naturally forms a semi-circular bench. The original design featured a
biomimetic, sea urchin-like protrusion, but due to cost constraints, it was
simplified to a smooth surface during implementation. The eye-shaped openings provide views of the sea and reduce the
coverage of the membrane. The semi-transparent fabric presents a futuristic appearance, along with the wind
turbine. Visitors bring their own food and dine with family under the dome.

The Lingang
Ecological Three Pavilions attempt to create intriguing spots along the lengthy landscape.
Different from typical architectural projects, they bridge between landscape
features, public art, and infrastructure, coordinating multiple factors and
natural conditions. Although the material experimentation in the project was
not fully realized, the intervention of small characteristic structures in
large-scale infrastructure projects is a positive attempt.
